Members of CEJ (Coalition for Educational Justice) Protest High Stakes Standardized Testing
|
|
| On April 18th students, parents and teachers staged a demonstration at Washington High School to encourage Los Angeles Board of Education member Mike Lansing to support a motion to commit resources to a study of assessments that can be used in place of high stakes testing. The group of protesters, comprised primarily of members of the Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ), a grassroots organization made up of teachers, students and parents in Los Angeles, marched around Washington High School. Santa Monica High students Sebastian Cantero and Angela Rívera conducted interviews with students, teachers and community members throughout the protest. |
Interview with CEJ leader, Alex Caputo-Pearl
Alex Caputo-Pearl, a member of the CEJ Steering Committee and a teacher at Crenshaw High School, spoke to Teaching to Change LA about the effects of testing and the steps students, teachers and parents can take to protest the negative uses of standardized testing.
"The practice of giving out relatively small amounts of money based on test score improvements covers over and obscures the need for a more expansive infusion of money in low income communities of color." |

Why is this event important to you?
This event is important to me today because schools all over South L.A. are practically the same. We have a lack of materials. We have teachers that arent even fully educated who are trying to teach us. And our bathrooms are very unsanitary.

What would you do with the millions of dollars spent on tests?
If it was for our school, I would buy better books. If it were for LAUSD, I would spread it equally among all the schools. Give it to the ones who need it.
