Animated Map
This series of maps shows all public high schools in LA County and follows the 1996 9th grade cohort of students at each school. Each map shows the progression of these students during their high school career from 9th grade until graduation. The 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and graduation rate follow the 9th grade students and show the retention and graduation rates at each school. The UC/CSU eligibility map shows the percentage of all entering 9th graders in the Fall of 1996 who graduated in Spring of 2000 having completed the courses required for UC or CSU. The UC Enrollment map shows the percentage of all entering 9th graders in the Fall of 1996 who enrolled in a University of California campus in the Fall of 2000.

How did we get the comparison numbers?

The 9th-12th grade and graduation rate maps are broken into two categories: above and below the state graduation average. California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS) report a 68.7% graduation rate from the 1996 9th grade cohort. Additionally, the CSU/UC Eligible rate is compared by the state master plan goal of the top 1/3 of each graduating class to be eligible to enroll in UCs or CSUs. Since only 68% of students graduate, 1/3 of 68.7 % results in 23% of incoming 9th graders qualifying for eligibility. Lastly, the UC-going goal of California states that the top eighth of the graduating class be accepted into a UC, or 1/8th of the 68.7% of incoming 9th graders, for a state average of 8.5% of the 9th grade cohort. The data represented on the income map is from census data.
