They do make me feel welcome at this school, especially when I volunteer.

When we are at the entrance we feel welcome, but when we come into the school, we don’t.
I think that they don’t like when we visit.

Not so much because sometimes I come to the school, walk around, and no one says hello.
No because when something is not going well, administrators do not like it when parents get actively involved and they look at you as if you are the problem.
2. When your child is having a problem at school, is there a school official that will help you and your child?

Yes there are but sometimes we have to look for them.
They have helped me before.
When I come to the school meetings, the principal is friendly. Yes, they have been responsive the times that I have asked them for help. For example, one times I asked them to give me guidelines on how to help my child with his classes, and they offered advice.
Sometimes, but you have to be persistent and find different ways of finding the right person to solve the problem.
No, when my child had a problem with his uniform, it took them six months to resolve it.
No, they are always caught up in other things when they are supposed to be supervising the students.
There usually isn’t anyone available to help. They have never helped me.
They don’t help much because oftentimes they don’t listen to our concerns.

Yes. They talk to me on a personal level and answer nicely.
You can feel the respect in this school.
Sometimes. Personally, I feel that they get bothered and when I have gone to the school to talk about an issue regarding my daughter, they ignore us.

At the beginning I didn’t feel that they respected the parents, but they are changing now.
No, the main counselor told us that we intimidate him and that we couldn’t be in the office. They violate our rights.

They do listen and the send you the person responsible for the problem.
Yes, if we speak loudly and directly with the teachers and my child’s counselors, they can let us know how our child is doing in school.
I believe so although I don’t have any experience with this.

They didn’t listen to the parents so much and no solutions were created, but things are beginning to change.

I asked my child and he said that he feels safe, but in my opinion, I don’t think that he does.
Maybe, although the high volume of kids does not permit it.
No because there is no security or someone looking over things and officials use any excuse to abuse their power.
No. There is not a lot of security and the students sometime are out of control and there is no quality supervision.
I think that there are insecurities at the school because other kids tell my child things.
They don’t feel secure because there are many problems that exist in different forms.

Yes because I take them to school and they don’t have to go by themselves.

Yes. Most of the time I take and pick-up my child from school. But when he has to walk, I don’t think that he feels safe.
My son is safe because I take him and pick him up from school. If he had to walk, then he wouldn’t be safe.

There is no security inside and outside of the school.

Yes, they are always attentive.
They do respect them because they have helped them.
No. It seems that they are in a military academy. They don’t have the skills needed to discipline the students correctly.
My son has told me one day that they had treated him badly.
No. An administrator disrespected the students because he spoke to them in a wrong tone.
They don’t respect them, speak terribly at them, and yell.
Not all of the school officials respect the students because they don’t speak to the appropriately.

Yes, they take action but maybe it is not enough.
I believe that they listen to the students’ concerns now because my son is more motivated to study.

I don’t feel that they listen to the students. If they don’t listen to us, then why would they listen to them?
No. It does not seem that they care too much.
On one occasion I brought it to the attention of the principal that there are a lot of problems with fights but until this day, there has not been any form of action.
No. The college counselor at the high school sent wrong information to qualify for financial aid and my son was not able to receive the necessary funds.
9. Does the school prepare students to be South Gate’s future leaders?

I am not sure because it the first year at the school.
No. The leadership class planned a peaceful protest opposing the war and the principal was not in agreement so the flyers were thrown away and raised his voice at a teachers in front of the students. How do we develop leaders if students cannot express their opinion?
No, to become leaders, they need the appropriate classes and for the teachers to be more prepared.
No, the schools sees it better that they don’t have the leadership skills, so their authority won’t be challenged. This is the same for the parents.
The school has not done much for my son. He is in the seventh grade and is not advanced enough. I am very worried about him because if he continues this way, he will not be able to accomplish his goal of becoming a professional. But I have a lot of faith that St. Mary will help me and my child will succeed.
No because more needs to be done to prepare the students.
They don’t prepare or teach them the basics to becoming future leaders.
I don’t feel that they are prepared to be leaders—they need knowledge of the world around them to triumph.

Sí pero a veces tenemos que buscar varios modos.

Cuando vengo a reuniones de la escuela, el director es amable. Si, han respondido las veces que les he pedido ayuda. Por ejemplo, una de las veces les pedí que me orientaran en como ayudar a mi hijo con sus clases y me dieron recomiendaciones.
A veces pero tienes que ser persistente y encontrar a la persona adecuada para solucionar el problema.

No porque no hay seguridad o alguien que supervise y los oficiales utilizan cualquier excusa para abusar de su poder.
No. No hay mucha seguridad y los estudiantes están alguna vez fuera de control y no hay supervisión adecuada.
Pienso que hay inseguridades en la escuela porque otros estudiantes les dicen cosas a mi hijo.

Sí. La mayoría del tiempo recojo y levanto a mi hijo de la escuela. Pero cuando él tiene que caminar, no pienso que él se siente seguro.

No. Parece que están en una escuela militar. No tienen las habilidades necesarias para disciplinar a los estudiantes correctamente.
Mi hijo me dijo un día que lo trataron mal.
No. Un administrador no respeto a los estudiantes porque él les habló en un tono incorrecto.
No los respetan, les hablan terrible y gritan.

Sí, toman la acción pero quizas no es bastante.
Creo que ahora escuchan las preocupaciones de los estudiantes porque mi hijo esta motivado a estudiar.

En una ocasión la traje a la atención del principal que hay muchos de problemas con peleas pero hasta este día no ha tomado ninguna forma de acción.
No. El consejero de la universidad en la secundaria envió información incorrecta para calificar para asistencia financiera y mi hijo no pudo recibir los fondos necesarios para el colegio.

No estoy segura porque es el primer año en la escuela.
No. La clase de liderazgo planeó una protesta pacífica que oponía la guerra y el principal no estaba de acuerdo así que tiró los cartelones y habló muy fuerte a la maestra delante de los estudiantes de una manera incorrecta. ¿Cómo obtenemos a líderes si no pueden los estudiantes expresar su opinión?
Para convertirse en líderes, necesitan las clases apropiadas y maestros preparados.
No, las escuelas lo ven mejor que no tengan las habilidades de liderazgo para que su autoridad no sea desafiada. Ésto es igual para los padres.
La escuela no ha hecho mucho para mi hijo. Él está en el séptimo grado y muy poco avanzado en la escuela. Me preocupo por él porque si él continúa en esta manera, él no podrá lograr su meta de ser un profesional. Pero tengo mucha fe que la Sta. Maria me ayudará y mi hijo tendrá éxito.
