You would think that every student would have access to computers. Not so in the Lynwood School District. Schools may have computers but our children aren’t using them. We found out while doing our investigations that there might be one to no computers in the classrooms. We did see more computers in GATE students’ rooms more than in regular classrooms. The computers that we do have are out of date or have no software installed. Maybe of our children are short-changed because Lynwood doesn’t have a grant writer to take advantage of grants for computer labs like other school districts.

Our district has an estimated 100 computers sitting in the Assistant Technology lab not being used on any given day. We learned that all Department Heads and some staff at the District level have lap top computers and, yet, students go without access. In Lynwood you have a lot of students with learning disabilities without assistant technology, but you have Department heads having top of the line technology. We think there is something wrong with this picture. We need to prepare our children so they can be competitive in society and successful in school and in the job markets. We were surveying school sites regarding computer access for students and parents. Some of the administrators weren’t very friendly and refused to give public information to parents and community members. Questions were asked like, why do you want this information? What are you going to do with this information? Or they asked us to bring a letter from our organization even though our children attend Lynwood School District.

Computer Neighbor vs. Non Computer Neighbors

If your community has computer access thank your lucky stars. Communities that have computers available are preparing their residents to be competitive in the job markets. Some school districts and cities partner with non-profit organizations to build computer accessible parent centers. As we move into the 21st Century assistant technology age, there are still some communities in the dark ages. Knowledge of computer literacy can improve earning potential. Some neighborhoods are voting on bills to deal with these issues.

Some of the advantages to having computer access are as follows:

1) White-collar jobs vs. physical labor jobs.
2) Students with computers are better prepared for class vs. Students with limited resources to prepare for class.
3) Parents with computer training who have a high-earning potential vs. Parents with no computer training who aren’t prepared for the 21st century and who will make minimum wage.

If your community doesn’t have computer access at your local churches, parks, teen centers, or schools, talk to your city and county officials and ask them to help the community by building a computer accessible neighborhood. Let your community officials know that there are grants, city funds, and county funds to assist them in bringing computers into their community.

It’s Just My Opinion

Computer access is limited in low-income neighborhoods. In my investigation I found out Lynwood was one of those communities not meeting the needs of its residents. The City of Lynwood isn’t computer access friendly with its residents. Sometimes I ask myself, does the city have the obligation to prepare its residents to be competitive in life? The answer I come up with is always yes. A community is only as good as the people living in it. When the Parent Project went out into the community to map out access to computers, there was only one place that had computers and that was the library. The library only has 10 computers and you have to make an appointment, as there is a waiting time of 1 – 2 hours. Many times half of the computers at the library are down and people have to wait up two days to use them. Lynwood has a beautiful Teen Center and Recreation Center for the youths, and only one computer for employees to use. I observed that Lynwood has a Skate Park, Basketball Courts, Tennis Courts, and other sports equipment, but stops short of making children competitive in society by purchasing computers for children to use at the center. It seems like some of our city officials are out of touch with the needs of our youth. We need to balance fun and education to equal the playing ground for our youths. We need to give our children all the opportunities to be competitive in school and in the job market. Every city official has a computer and a cell phone, but they have not made their neighborhood accessible to residents in their community. I found out that the city has a grant writer that writes grant for recreation, but doesn’t see writing grants for computer labs as important as sports.

In my opinion, computer labs can help our children and parents become better students and achieve job readiness.

Se piensa que todos los estudiantes tienen acceso a computadoras. Pues ese no es el caso en el Distrito Escolar de Lynwood. Las escuelas pueden tener computadoras pero nuestros hijos no las están usando. En nuestra investigación encontramos que los salones de clases pueden tener una computadora o no tener ninguna. Vimos que hay más computadoras en los salones de estudiantes GATE que en los salones regulares. Las computadoras existentes no son modernas ni están programadas. Tal vez nuestros hijos estén perdiendo oportunidades porque Lynwood no tiene una persona que escriba propuestas para obtener dinero para computadoras como lo hay en otras escuelas del distrito.

Nuestro distrito tiene aproximadamente 100 computadoras en la sala de Asistencia Tecnológica que no son usadas en un determinado día. Encontramos que muchos de los Jefes de Departamento del distrito y algunos del personal tienen computadoras portátiles mientras que muchos estudiantes no tienen acceso. En Lynwood hay muchos estudiantes que tienen problemas de aprendizaje que no tienen asistencia tecnológica pero los Jefes de Departamiento tienen lo más nuevo de la tecnología. Nosotros creemos que hay algo mal en este caso. Necesitamos preparar a nuestros hijos para que sean competentes en la sociedad, en la escuela, y en el trabajo. Investigamos a distintas escuelas acerca del acceso a computadoras para padres y estudiantes. Algunos de los administradores no fueron muy amables y se negaron a dar información pública a los padres de familia y miembros de la comunidad. Preguntaron porqué quieren esta información? Qué van a hacer con esta información? También nos pidieron que trajeramos una carta de la organización que nos había mandado a pesar de que nuestros asisten al Distrito Escolar de Lynwood.

Comunidades con computadoras vs. Comunidades sin computadoras

Si su comunidad tiene acceso a computadoras dele gracias a sus estrellas de la suerte. Las comunidades que tienen acceso a computadoras están preparando a sus residentes a ser más competentes en el mundo del trabajo. Algunos distritos escolares y ciudades se unen con organizaciones no lucrativas para crear centros para padres con acceso a computadoras. Conforme nos movemos hacia la era tecnológica del siglo XXI, siguen habiendo muchas comunidades en el pasado. El saber como usar computadoras puede mejorar el potencial salarial. Algunas comunidades están votando por leyes que tratan estos temas.

Algunas de las ventajas de tener acceso a las computadoras:

1) Trabajos intelectuales vs. trabajos manuales
2) Los estudiantes con computadoras están más preparados para sus clases vs. estudiantes con limitaciones para prepararse para sus clases.
3) Padres con conocimiento sobre computadoras que tienen alto potencial de salario vs. padres sin conocimiento sobre computadoras que no están preparados para el siglo XXI y que ganarán sueldo mínimo.

Si su comunidad no tiene acceso a computadoras en las iglesias locales, parques, centros juveniles, o escuelas, hable con sus representantes del condado o de la ciudad para que ayuden a su comunidad creando comunidades con acceso a computadoras. Dejeles saber a sus representantes comunitarios que existen becas, fondos de la ciudad, y fondos del condado para asistirlos a que traigan computadoras a su comunidad.

El acceso a computadoras es limitado en las comunidades de salarios bajos. En mi investigación, encontré que Lynwood es una de esas comunidades que no satisface las necesidades de sus residentes. La ciudad de Lynwood no tiene acceso a computadoras para sus residentes. Algunas veces me pregunto, tiene la ciudad la responsabilidad de preparar a sus residentes para ser competentes en la vida? La respuesta siempre es sí. Una comunidad solo es tan buena como los residentes que viven en ella. Cuando el Proyecto de Padres salió a la comunidad para hacer un mapa del acceso a computadoras, solo había un lugar en el cual había computadoras: la biblioteca. La biblioteca solo tiene 10 computadoras y uno tiene que hacer cita siendo que hay un tiempo de espera aproximadamente de 1 a 2 horas. Muchas veces, la mitad de las computadoras en la biblioteca no sirven y las personas tienen que esperar hasta dos días para usarlas. Lynwood tiene un Centro Juvenil y Centro de Recreación para Jóvenes muy hermoso, y sólo una computadora para uso del personal. Observé que Lynwood tiene un parque estatal, canchas de basketbol, canchas de tennis, y otras cosas deportivas, pero se queda corto en hacer a nuestros hijos competentes en la sociedad comprando computadoras para que nuestros hijos las usen en el centro. Parece que muchos de los representantes guvernamentales de la comunidad no saben lo que nuestra juventud necesita. Necesitamos balancear la diversión y la educación para igualar el nivel entre nuestra juventud. Necesitamos darle a nuestra juventud las oportunidades para ser competentes en la escuela y en el mundo profesional. Todo oficial de la ciudad tiene una computadora y un celular pero no han hecho las comunidades accesibles para los residentes de su comunidad. Me enteré que la ciudad tiene una persona que escribe propuestas financieras para recreación, pero no vé la importancia de escribir propuestas para obtener computadoras como lo hace para los deportes.

En mi opinión, las salas de computadoras pueden ayudar a los estudiantes y padres a convertirse en mejores estudiantes y lograr estar listos para el mundo del empleo.
